My talk is about reggae

Reggae arised in Jamaica especially in the city Kingston. In the 50ths was black American music very popular. But when this hype broke down, several dj's went experimenting with some music. They made albums with original African music combinated with new instruments like computer tunes.

In the 60ths, new styles like Ska, came into being. Ska was a mix from Rhythem & Blues, jazz, rock and jamaica’s national music. But through the more and more using of electrical instruments was ska changing into rocksteady. And at the end of the 60ths there came a very slow version of rocksteady, which was called reggae.
In Jamaica this music style was first discovered. And it was the first country where it became popular. After reggae conquered Jamaica, people in third world countries and england began to listen to it.

Within reggae there are several main styles like loversrock, dance hall, dubb and ragga. The original reggae is called rootsreggae. In the beginning of reggae there were few personal songs because most of the songs were covers. When reggae became more popular people started to write their own songs and these songs ment more than before.

Who were the ones that had made reggae popular. Familiar names are Buring Spear, Bunny Wailer, Big youth and of course Bob Marley. The main subject from there songs were love and politics. Most of the songs were protest songs like” I shot the sheriff “ From Bob Marley

A little information about Bob marley.
Bob’s original name is Robbert Nestey Marley. He was born in Kingston at 6 februari 1945. His parents were divorced and he lived with his mother in his friend’s house. That was the place where he and his friend Bunny Wailer had discovered music. They made songs together. Bob played on his guitar, that existed from a small fish can, a bamboo stick and electrisity cabels (they were used for the strings of the guitar). But when he was a little older he played in a band with Bunny Wailer and an other boy called Peter Tosh. Their first single was called “the wailing wailers”. This was how his music carreer began. It was sad that he died from cancer in his brains in 1981.

In the beginning the most reggae lovers were rasatafari. This is a way of living and believing that after death you will return to the promised land “ Ethiope”. You can recognize them by their dreads (man and women)

A few instruments that they are using in reggae songs.

The conga
This is a drum that is mostly played by two peoples at the same time with their hands.

The Pauk
Its a kettle who is covert by calfskin And you play on it with sticks.

They use far more instruments like trompets and other wind-instruments.
This all together, creates a relaxt tropical sound, the reggae music.
