Korte samenvatting van de inhoud
Yvette grows up with her father (a rector), her sister Lucille, Aunt Cissie and ‘Grannie’. Her mother left the family some years ago, and they don't speak of her anymore. Yvette is tired of having to do so many things, she's not free in whatever she wants to do. Lucille has this feeling also, but Yvette shows it. One they the girls decide to go out for a day. When they drive over a hill, they meet some gipseys, who invite them to get to know their futures. The gipsy-woman can tell fortunes. The girls want to do this, and one-by-one they let the gipsy-woman tell their futures. In the meanwhile, Yvette had got her eyes on a handsome, black male-gipsy. When the gipsy-woman wants to tell Yvette's future, Yvette says she changed her mind. The gipsy-woman takes Yvette to her shelter and tells her her fortune in secret. When they leave, Yvette gives the woman a little bit more money "for extra luck".
One of the next days, Aunt Cissie gets very mad at Yvette because she has spend the money that was meant for the church, to the gipsy-woman and going out. A few days later the gipsy-man shows up at their house, selling all kinds of stuff he made at the gipsy-camp. When Aunt Cissie is in the livingroom showing some copperwork, the gipsy tells Yvette she can come by on Fridays. Yvette goes there on Friday, and the gipsy and Yvette have a click.
One day when Yvette drives back home on her bicycle, she drives over a dike that collapses, and she get's sucked into the ground, into the could water. Her body temperature is far too low, but fortunately the gipsy comes, and saves her. She sleeps at his place, and when she wakes up, she finds a note from the gipsy, which says they'll see each other soon again, and they'll stay together forever. It's signed by Joe Boswell. This is the first time she knows his name.
Drie indrukwekkende momenten uit het boek
The first moment that impressed me was the part of Aunt Cissie coming into Yvette's bedroom. She started shouting at her, just to dump her anger, and left. I thought it would have many consequences, but it was gone as fast as it happened.
The second moment was when Yvette went to the gipsy, on Friday. She went there on her bicycle, and told everyone she went on a picnic. When she came there she wasn't like "dirty dirty dirty!", she just accepted the way of life from the gipsies. She joined them with what they did. This shows that Yvette doesn't care much about the classes of people (the difference between rich and poor).
The third moment is when Leo asks Yvette to become his wife. She is in shock, and doesn't know what to do. The gipsy is not the first thing that comes up in her mind, this fell in my attention because she's always blinded from love because of him. It's also very strange because you don't read any close conversations or whatever between Yvette and Leo. I was glad that she said no.
Ervaring achteraf
It was a nice book to read, it kept my attention. I didn’t read very much at one time, so every time I opened the book I had to think “what happened again the last time i red it?”. It wasn’t very easy to read, there were a lot of words I didn’t know before. I understood the story, so it wasn’t too hard either. To understand the story a little bit more, i looked at some other bookreports on the internet. This helped me very well with some details.
