6. - The priest: In the story people call him the Whisky Priest, because of his alcoholism. He is always fighting his conscience. His faith and alcoholism are each others biggest counterparts within himself. He has a child, dispite of his occupation as a catholic man of the cloth. Deep inside he is a good person though; he puts his faith and his job as a priest above the fortunes of his own life.

- The police-lieutenant: He wants to kill and destroy everything that has made the people of Mexico miserable. He blames the Catholic Church for the bad situation in his country, therefore he hunts the priest down. He is prepared to sacrifice everything, even his own happiness to achieve this goal.

They play each others counterparts and nemesis in this story. The lieutenant wants to kill the ‘whisky priest’ but still admires him.

7. It is set in de mountains in Mexico near the southern border.

8. The story is set in de ’20 of the previous century.

- The priest comes to meet one mister tench and later on mister fellows
- Flashback over the priests escape attempt and its failure come up during his talk to mister fellows.
- his flight through the mountains and his attempts to offer anyone his services as a priest
- He gets arrested for illegal possesion of alcohol. But the officers don’t know that he is the whisky priest so they let him go.
- He goes across the border and things seem to calm down but al of a sudden he is persuaded to come back to mexico to spiritualy guide a dying man and he knows its a trap but goes anyway because of his duties as a man of the cloth.
- He gets executed and becomes a martyr and at the same time a new priest arrives in Mexico

9. In the first and last part of the story the narrator is switched but in the middle two parts the narrator is the priest.

10. The power and the glory is according to my ideas based on the power over life that the lieutenant has and the glory in the afterlife the priest has because of his martyrdom.

12. Als de lieutenant zegt dat hij hem bewonderd vind ik dat een ontroerend stukje. En ik vond het spannend toen de priester werd gevangen.

13. “What an impossible fellow I am, he thought, and how useless. I have done nothing for anybody. I might just as well have never lived. His parents were dead – soon he wouldn’t even be a memory – perhaps after al he wasn’t really hellworthy.”

De waarheid in dit stukje. Het lijkt te passen op bijna ieder mens. Dat spreekt me zo aan die eerlijkheid en openheid waarin hij erkent dat hij niks heeft bereikt door tegen het gezag in te gaan.

14. Als hij het geld vraagt voor de doop omdat hij heeft gehoord dat mensen het anders niet belangrijk genoeg vinden. Ik vond dit deel niet zozeer schrikwekkend alleen het deed me denken waarom hij dacht dat hij nou eigenlijk vervolgd was. Dat was toch zeker deze onderdrukking en beroving van de armen?

15. Niet met een boek of film die ik ken want het is een boek apart het gaat over een onconventionele priester die dood wordt gemaakt vanwege zijn priester zijn.

16. Het boek heeft me aan het denken gezet over het geloof en het anti-geloof het was voor mij daarom ook wel zinnig om te lezen hoewel ik niet zeker weet of het ook voor andere mensen belangrijk was. Hoewel het mij wel aan het nadenken heeft gezet was het op sommige punten ook uitermate saai hoezeer dat ook niet te onderbouwen viel. Daarom is het niet aan te raden om dit boek ’s avonds om half elf nog te lezen.

17. Ik vind het taalgebruik nogal langdradig en soms herhalend.

18. ik vind dit boek toch wel belangrijk dat ik het gelezen heb e.d. maar als ik zou zeggen dat ik ervan genoten heb dan zou ik een leugenaar zijn.

19. dit boek krijgt van mij een 3 omdat het toch wel een goed beeld van de toenmalige werkelijkheid geeft en toch ook wel mij aan het denken heeft gezet maar ook omdat het mij niet uit mijn slaap kon houden(van de spanning en actie).

20. Nee, want ik denk dat als ik zelf niet een boekje moest lezen ik dit boek zeker niet had gelezen omdat het in het begin ook nogal lang van stof is.
