The Lonely Londoners. Samuel Selvon
1956
126 Pages

Title : The title could be interpreted in two ways. 1. They are lonely and because they live in London they are Londoners. 2. They are foreigners in London and thus are considered a group of Londoners on their own. They don’t belong there and therefore they are “the lonely”

Theme: The theme could be described as alienation. A mixture between discrimination and loneliness

Motto: There is none

The book is really told from an all-knowing narrator but focuses on the thoughts and actions of Moses. There are several dialogues in the story but mostly it’s just a told story

Setting: The story takes place in London and the scenery changes with the feelings of Moses. In the winter everything is gray and sober and in the summer every thing is warm and soft and colorful.

Time: The story takes place in the fifties. The time span is about 4 to 5 years from when Galahad first came to Britain and to where Moses thinks about writing that book. The story I not chronological at all the story jumps from one time to the next

Linguistic use: Awful. Most of the pages don’t have any grammatical rules applied to them. No dot’s comma’s no capital letters or anything . The writer uses a lot of native West Indian words like “vex” instead of angry or “liming” instead of hanging out.

Characters: All characters are flat. They don’t change throughout the story and their only purpose is to show what Britain was like for blacks
Moses: A guy from Trinidad who is always helping others and never him self. He feels home sick but never goes home
Henry Oliver (Galahad): Also a guy from Trinidad who for some strange reason feels hot I winter and cold in the summer. He is a decent guy who just has a big mouth. Tolroy: Just a Jamaican fellow who had his entire family on his lap. Ma: Barely there she works in a restaurant. Tanty: She is your general “big mama” type person. She cooks an takes care or the family. Agnes: Tolroy’s sister and “wife” of Lewis
Lewis: Was convinced his wife was cheating on him so he beat her till she left him. Captain: A hustler to the core. He cons men and women into trusting him because of his boyish good looks and then lives off of them. When they see this he leaves and does the same to others. He loves women. Daniel: He likes treating women very well and can never see a women cry. He is rich for a black man . Bartholomew (Bart): The cheapest guy of the bunch also ashamed of being black. Big City: He’s a jolly dreamer always thinking of things as winning the lottery. Five past twelve: He’s your general slob at a party. Always getting drunk, being rude to your guests and making a scene
Harris: He is a Brit wannabe. Wearing bowler hats and having a umbrella with him and the times hanging out of his pocket so that you can clearly see the name. He hangs around with the high class of London and doesn’t like it when the boys crash his party’s

Summary: Moses is on his way to the train station to meet up with Henry Oliver (Galahad). Moses is always getting stuck with these kind of jobs. Moses is very soft hearted and therefore people always find a way to have him do stuff for them. Especially for those who have recently arrived in London.

White people (The Brits) Complain that there are already too many Black people in Britain. When on at the station Moses feels home sick just by seeing so many black people all together. He sees Tolroy an Jamaican fellow. He sent for his mother but to his surprise his entire family came with her. Tolroy gets upset and he and his mother argue. Meanwhile a reporter interviews Tolroy’s aunt “Tanty”. The next day the newspaper reads; “ Now Jamaican Families coming to Britain” With Ma and Tanty came Tolroys sister ;Agnes and her husband; Lewis.

When everybody has left the train Moses sees a guy who approaches him and turns out to be Galahad. Galahad is a strange person for in the dead of winter he is only wearing a summer suit and doesn’t feel the cold. Also he had barely any money with him no luggage and no cigarettes or rum. Eight and a half months later he would have a child in London. Moses tells Galahad about where he lives and about Britain. They eat at Moses’ apartment and talk of the people back home (the village idiot who always pretends to be driving a car ). Moses gets homesick (again) The next morning they go out looking for work. Moses tests Galahad by tempting him to claim dole (Onderstant) and just be paid by the government but Galahad wants to work. Galahad is one of those guys who thinks ha can do every thing on his own. Moses advises him to just go back home (like he advises everyone). They compare England to the U.S ; In the U.S you know where you stand there are notices all over the place saying “no colored” or “no blacks” but in England they politely tell you to haul ass.

Galahad finds out what’s up with Moses ; He scares new comers off because he wants to go back himself. When Galahad is off alone to find himself a job he feels just how lonely you can be in London. Luckily for him Moses comes back to help him set up a job and a room. When Moses was fresh from Trinidad he had a place that was cheap and there was a hot meal available every day . There he met a Nigerian man named Captain. Cap got sent to London to study but when he got here he spent his money on women and cigarettes. His father stopped sending him money after a while and Cap learned to hustle very well. He was always wearing the same clothes but they were always clean and neat. He stayed in rooms for two or three weeks at a time saying his father would sent him his allowance but when the money didn’t come he got kicked out every time. He gets money by picking up chicks and sucking them dry. He once got stuck with an Australian chick who even after she found out he was lying o her stayed with him and he continued to suck her dry. She then went crying by Daniel. Daniel can’t refuse a crying woman so he always borrowed her money. Cap even hustled Moses for a coat but returned it when Moses mentioned the police. Cap paused hustling when he hustled himself into sleeping with a transvestite. Then he got married to a French girl whom he hustled too. He got Daniel to take care of her. (who likes treating women well). He always comes by Moses when Moses has a girl. Day after day Cap lives on defying all logic and reason. Then there is Bartholomew (Bart). Bart is so cheap if he had the money he would still not eat in public just so that no one would ask him for a meal. Bart was slightly lighter skinned that the rest of the guys. Because of this he never admitted to being black but said he was Latin American. He would only be nice to you when you made it absolutely clear to him you had no intention of borrowing money. He is afraid of getting into trouble so he moves around a lot. He isn’t lucky with the ladies so when he got a girl he held on tight. They were even going to get married. This all changed when he met her father who kicked him out of the house. After that bit of British hospitality he is a little more like the rest.

Tolroy got his entire family settled in. Got Lewis some work at the factory where Moses works and asked Moses to keep an eye on him. Moses being softhearted as he usually is does just that. They start talking and when Moses mentions that SOME women cheat on their husbands when they are off to work Lewis is convinced Agnes is doing the same so he beats her. He beats her so bad that one day she left him for good and also pressed charges for assault .After a month without Agnes he’s living like he was never married. Tanty advised Agnes to press charges. Tolroy is pissed at Tanty for complaining that she’s cold. Then she lays the lecture on him about how she changed his diapers when he was little ect.ect. Then the book goes on to describe the situation they’re in . The houses where the blacks living are all old and broken down. No one has hot water. It’s your general ghetto with a market. The rich don’t know anything about the poor and vice versa. More and more market’s pop up that sell West Indian specialties. Or tailors who make the kinds of clothes the black people like. Tanty loves this environment she feels right at home gossiping and buying groceries . She feels like se is back in Jamaica. She even dares to take the “tube” (subway)

When the summer cam Galahad got cold. He had to buy woolen underwear and an overcoat. Of course Moses laughed his head off. He got an Australian chick and boasting (opscheppen) to the guys about the fancy places he’s been makes him feel important. He has fancy clothes to go out with but has work clothes look like shit. He has a good job working nights. In general Galahad is doing and feeling so good that even being discriminated against doesn’t ruin his mood. He got the white chicks he was promised back home. He told Moses about it and Moses smiled a knowing smile.

Big City came from an orphanage in Trinidad. When he was old enough he joined the army there he ate so much you couldn’t see his face behind the pile of food. He also kept on talking about how one day he would travel around the world and visit all the big cities. That’s how he got his name. He eventually wound up in London. He always plays the lottery and has Moses fill out the ticket along with al other paperwork. Moses being the good hearted person he is does it too even though he is fed up with it. Moses some times gets frightened by the thought of wasting his life in London.

The boys have their hang-out place in the park or somewhere else in that area. There the boys go to pick up chicks when they are all dressed up and looking nice and the girls have on their summer dresses you could see the curves that were hiding behind the winter coats. Here is also where Big City and Moses dare Galahad to speak up about his political opinions. When Galahad finally does Big City keeps interrupting him and Galahad gets mad. He lounges at Big City but they don’t fight. From there on Galahad keeps threatening Big City when he’s not around but when they do meet Galahad backs out and Big City walks away with pride. When Big City left Galahad went on to say how next time they meet he would beat Big City. Big City always had dreams. He has had his share of wealthy girls.

Most of the boys hate winter because it makes London gray and people get sad and don’t go out much. Moses had his memories to keep him happy throughout the winter. He boasted that he had been with girls of every kind. He worked during the day and picked up chicks during the night. The first white chick he picked up gave him a scare. They went out but when they got back to his place and got busy she started moaning and twitching and Moses thought she was going to die. So he called up Daniel and when he came down she was already dressed and cooled down. Daniel didn’t see a thing wrong with her. Moses relieved that she was alright dropped her off at the bus stop. Most of the girls the boys pick up are indeed prostitutes, that’s why they complain that they are loosing their money to them. But some are decent girls. Moses tells Galahad how things are in the night life. About how once when he got tired of this steady girl he was seeing he gave her to Cap. But Cap never paid her. There are also black women who prostitute. For white men it’s always a big thing if you did a black woman. But blacks never pick up blacks in that manner in London. Then there was a guy named Five past twelve. He got his nick name because he is so black. A guy once said; “Boy you black as midnight” then turned to him again and said; “No, you look more like five past twelve”. Five once got into trouble for dating a girl. Some guys didn’t like it so they covered him in oil and ran after him with matches. He also worked for the R.A.F (Royal Air Force) and he was always out to borrow money. He liked to drink and wasn’t shy for a good smoke of weed. He had women all over town and was always bugging Moses to see where the next party was going to be. He liked to party a little to much.

Once Harris was giving another party for his rich friends and the boys showed up. Harris is always afraid that Five is going to show up at his party and make a scene and Five always does too. At the party the boys behave in the beginning. Tolroy comes with his Ma ,Tanty and Lewis. Tanty makes Harris dance with her. The music is going and Five starts dancing and going crazy and gets high. He goes and dances with Harris’ girl. When Big City arrived the boys dared him to dance with the other white chick Harris brought along. He asks and she accepts. Cap went home with two girls. Daniel is buying the girls all sorts of drinks. Then things got messy. A guy smashed Five’s head with a cola bottle because Five was getting too close to his girl. Bart is drunk and still looking for that one girl. Big City went up to play the steal band. Tanty is pulling on Tolroy trying to get him to go home. Lewis is boasting about how he used to beat Agnes and how he’s happy about the divorce. Moses talks about hoe things were better in the old days. The party’s over at half past eleven with the song “God save the Queen” .

There were also some bitter seasons when most of the boys out of work. Galahad for example lost his job. It was winter so at least he was warm. Things got so bad that when he was very hungry he caught a pigeon to eat. An old lady say him and cursed him. He brought the bird to Moses and although Moses didn’t agree he was too hungry to say no to the meal. They talked about Galahads father and about how no Prostitute wanted to sleep with him. One finally did and he embarrassed her by greeting all the other girls in the morning. Talking of old times made Moses homesick (again.). Moses has been in London for 10 years now. And he’s tired of the same old routine. Then Moses confesses that he does want to go back. In Britain nobody cares and if the boys didn’t get together every once in a while life would be unbearable. There is one fellow Joseph who got married to an English girl and they have children but both they and the children have a bunch of problems with the whole race thing. They talk about how nobody knows you died until the milk bottles start piling up in front of your door.

There is a similar story to that of the pigeons but this happened to Cap. He got a room for two weeks by the sea. He got the top room there and the seagulls always slept there. On day he got up really hungry and started to think of food, the seagulls came to mind. He tried to grab one but all he got were feathers. Then he put a little bread out and made a lasso and put the rope in the lasso on the ledge. The bird slipped out of the lasso. Then he tried with a box a hanger and rope . Setting the box up so that if the bird ate the bread he had to pull the rope, the hanger would then be pulled away an the box would fall on the bird. This did work but the bird got out into his room. He struggled to catch the bird again but finally threw a bedspread over the bird and he then proceeded to eat it. In those short two weeks he lessened the population of seagulls. To not attract attention he threw away the feathers in a brown paper bag. When he got kicked out of that room he found another room at the top. But no matter how much bread he put out. The seagulls didn’t come.

Most of the boys do complain about Britain but none of them ever go back. During the winter the boys work eat and sleep and on Sunday’s they all pass by Moses to chit chat. Moses once made a joke about it saying; “ you all coming to church on Sunday”. Some times when he can’t sleep he hears their voices and thinks of them. He feels their pain The all come to him with their problems and Moses never bugs them with his. When the boys leave on Sunday Moses gets tears. Whether is if because of home sickness or because life is hard he doesn’t know. Some times he wants to stop filling in Big City’s lottery tickets. Or stop hearing Tolroy complain about his mother, stop seeing Harris and Galahad dress up like real Londoners. Stop hearing Cap ask for money. Every year he vows to go back but he never does. One night he contemplates saving money and going back before the summer comes because when summer comes he always changes his mind. He knows that the boys are laughing because they are afraid that if they don’t they’ll start crying. Daniel tells him about how French people getting rich by writing a book about the simple life like that of a street sweeper. Moses wonders if that would work for him.

It was a summer night. Laughter fell softly. It was the sort of night that is you weren’t making love to a woman you felt you were the only one like that.

Your summary disgusts me. 'Linguistic use:
Awful. Most of the pages don’t have any grammatical rules applied to them. No dot’s comma’s no capital letters or anything . He was the first author of the modernist/postmodernist era to narrate and portray dialogue in dialect. This gave voice to the minority.
