Jonas is an eleven-year-old boy who lives in the community. In this community there’s no suffering, hunger, war, color nor love. They have no feelings of their own. Everything is controlled by the Elders. You can get released from the community if you are disabled, really old or when you break the rules.
When you turn twelve, there’s a big ceremony and every Twelve is assigned a job. Except Jonas. The Chief Elder explains that Jonas is selected to be The Receiver of Memory, which is a big deal. Jonas receives memories from the old Receiver. The old Receiver becomes the Giver. The memories are old memories of things that aren’t in their community, like snow, pain and color. The first memory he receives is someone sledding down a hill in the snow.
There are also bad memories. Those completely change the way Jonas looks at his world. He is really upset about the fact that people get released so easy. He and the Giver make a plan: Jonas will leave the community. Only then the memories he received go back to the people in the community. He hopes that the memories will change the community. Jonas wants to leave for Elsewhere on his bike. Elsewhere is a free place, not controlled by the Elders.
Jonas leaves with Gabriel, his little brother who was going to be released. Weeks later, they’re still travelling and they’re almost dying because it’s very cold. He tries to bring back memories of the sun, to get a little warmer. It starts snowing and Jonas gets to the base of a hill that looks familiar. He sees the sled (from the first memory he received from the Giver) waiting for him. Together with Gabriel, he climbs onto the sled and they start sliding down the hill. The ride brings them to Elsewhere.
