Hazel is 13 years old when she gets thyroid, thyroid is a long cancer. Hazel is now 16 years old. Her mother thinks she is depressed so she sends hazel to a support group, there she meets Augustus Waters. She really likes Augustus. One of the things Augustus and Hazel talk about is the book An imperial Affliction. Hazel really wants to meet Peter van Houten the writer of the book, so they go to Amsterdam using Augustus wish. There they meet him and he is a asshole he didn’t gave Hazel the answer that she wanted. Later they confess each other’s love and they make out. Then Augustus tells hazel that the cancer is back and it gets worse and worse.

Summary

chapter 1: Hazel goes to a support group on wednesday, because her mom thinks she is depressed. Hazel doesnt like going to the support groep she things its stupid. One day she meets augustus waters. Augustus keeps staring at hazel throughout the session. After they said their prayers Augustus walks over to hazel to ask for her full name. He asks her to go and watch a movie with him, she agrees and tells her mom.

chapter 2: Augustus invited Hazel over to his house to watch a movie called V for Vendetta, they watched this movie because augustus thinks hazel looks like natalie portman who plays the main character. The parents of augustus were cooking enchiladas. They talked about their selfs, he asked her what her favourite book was and she told him it was an imperial affliction by Peter van Houten. She never told anyone about this book because she likes to keep it to herself. But for some reason she told Augustus. She drives them home and augustus likes to she her again tomorrow. She tells him she will call him after she finishes his book, The price off dawn.

chapter 3: It’s hazel her half birthday, so she decides to go to the mall with her old friend kaitlyn. they meet each other and then go shopping, hazel buys a pair of flip flops. She told her mother to come and pick her up at 6, but hazel got tired of being with kaitlyn so she tells kaitlyn that she is tired and that she’s going home. But hazel actually goes to a place in the mall where she can go and read the next book in the series of the price off dawn. She ends up really liking the books.

chapter 4: The night after she went to the mall, Hazel decided to reread An imperial affliction, as she’s reading the book she remembers to call Augustus when she had read the price off dawn which she already read. So she text him and she asks him if he had read An imperial affliction already, he was almost finished and didn’t want to give her his opinion until he had read the whole book. The morning after that she goes to class and after class she goes to the movie with her mom. When she comes home she has a few messages from augustus about the ending of the book. She decides to call him and when he picks up he tells her to go to her hous. Where isaac was crying over Monica who had just broke up with him.

chapter 5:A week after she met up with augustus and isaac. Augustus had emailed the assistant of Peter van Houten and he answered back, so hazel wrote a email to. The answer to al here questions were rather disappointing. Peter only wants to talk to her in real life, but he currently lives in Amsterdam. Hazel also goes to the hospital to check up on isaac who got operated on his eyes which made him go blind. On Saturday she goes to a market with her parents and August calls to tell her he’s at her house, she tells him to wait there. Augustus takes Hazel on a date to a park that wa behind a museum. Augustus told her he wanted to go to Amsterdam with her for his wish. So now they’re going to amsterdam in may.

chapter 6: Hazel is at home questioning everything, she feels like she is a grenade and she does not know if she likes likes Augustus. She doesn’t want to maken any friends because she doesn’t want to hurt them if she dies. Hazel talked about this with her parents and texted about it wit Augustus.

chapter 7: Hazel woke up with a really painful headache, her parents rushed her to the hospital. It turns out she had 1,5 liters of fluid in her lungs. Her brains got the little oxygen so that caused her headache, after almost a week in the hospital she got to go home. She didn’t want Augustus to see her so he visited her te last day.

chapter 8: Hazel had a cancer team meeting, because they wanted to discuss how they are going to make her better. At first they said that she can’t go to Amsterdam but later they said that it will be ok. Augustus meets up with her at her house and together they sell her childhood swing.

chapter 9: The day before they left to Amsterdam Hazel went to the support group, There she was reminded of how stupid this group really is. She talked to isaac and he asked her to go to his house, there they were goi g to play the prince off dawn. Isaac asked her how she feels about Augustus. She said that she liked him but she didn’t want to monica him by leaving him when she dies.

chapter 10: Hazel gets ready to go to Amsterdam, when they were by Augustus house to pick him up they heard someone crying. It was Augustus who was screaming at his mom. Later he comes to the car like nothing happens. They go to the airport and they boarded on the airplane. On the airplane Hazel and Augustus are watching a movie. When Hazels mom gets to sleep they decide to go and read. Augustus asks Hazel to read a poem to him and she does. When the poem was finished Augustus told Hazel that he is in love with her. Hazel doesn’t say it back and the flight goes on.

chapter 11: They land in Amsterdam, Hazel decides that she wants to rest. After she woke up her and Augustus went on a date to a fancy restaurant, there they talked about life. Peter van Houten had paid their meal. Then they walked to the canal and sat on a bench. They talked about dying and Augustus former girlfriend Caroline (who is dead).

chapter 12: The next morning they went to see Peter van Houten, it was quite a disappointment he was a strange drunk asshole. He didn’t gave Hazel the answers that she wanted and he was quite rude. His assistant lidewij was shocked from the experience she just had. She was very sorry, so she took Hazel and Augustus to the anne frank museum. There Augustus and Hazel shared their first kiss together. After the museum they went to the hotel The filosoof. And there the made love in augustus room. Hazel got to her own room.

chapter 13: The last full day in Amsterdam, they went to a cafe and got some coffee. Hazels mom said she is going to the vondelpark and rijksmuseum. Hazel and Augustus go back to the hotel. Where augustus told hazel his cancer is back and is spread across his hip and liver. Hazel and Augustus comfort each other and talk about that everything is going to be alright, but Augustus doesn’t have that hope.

chapter 14: On the flight home gus got a severe pain in his chest. When the landed Hazels dad was waiting for them to pick them up. They dropped Augustus of at his house and Hazel and het father bonded. Augustus had got new medicine for his cancer. A few days later hazel went to Augustus house and talked to his family, then isaac stopped by and they talked about monica. They decided to go to monica’s house to throw eggs at het car. Augustus asked Hazel if she can take a picture of them. Then they drove home.

chapter 15: Hazel and her parents went to visit Augustus there Augustus mom had cooked risotto, they told them about the delicious food they had eaten in amsterdam. A few weeks later gus had a relapse. He was in the hospital and it was not looking good. A few days after that they want to the art park funky bones.

chapter 16: Hazel visits Augustus, togheter they eat hazel asks him how he is is and he tells her that he’s grand. He tells her that he wants to write a sequel to an imperial affliction, but he is to tired. Hazel n says you can just tell me but he tells her that he doesn’t know how it ends already.

chapter 17: It’s now a month ago when they went to Amsterdam. Augustus was really sick. They just played the price of dawn again.

chapter 18: Augustus went to a gas station in the middle of the night to buy some cigarettes, but there was something wrong with his g-tube, he called hazel to help him and she needed to swear she won’t call 911 or his parents. So she came to him he had puke al over himself and he looked like he was dying, so she called 911 and told him she was sorry.

chapter 19: Hazel visited Augustus again, his half sisters were also there, they talked and joked. This was the last good day before the last good day.

chapter 20: Augustus called hazel with the question if she can write an eulogy. And then come to the literal heart of jesus for a prefuneral. There they cried and isaac was also there to tell his eulogy. Augustus asked if she wanted to do her eulogy at his funeral. She said yes.

chapter 21: It was 8 days after the prefuneral that Augustus Waters had died. His mother called Hazel and told her he was a few hours unconscious before he died.

chapter 22: Hazel went to Augustus funeral, there she and some others said there eulogy. Then she noticed peter van houten was there. He said that in Augustus his last moments he had contacted him and told him to come to his funeral and give her the answers that she wanted. But she didn’t want to hear from him so she send him away.

chapter 23: a couple days later Hazel went to isaacs house, there they talked and played video games, the isaac told Hazel that Augustus wrote the sequel for her. So Hazel went to his house to go and check but she couldn’t find it.

chapter 24: Gus his father called Hazel to let her know that there was a note book found in the hospital with a few pages missing, so Hazel went to support group to search for it but she couldn’t find it. When she got home she got in a discussion with her mom but that ended in her mom telling her she is going to be a social worker. Hazel was insanely happy for her mom.

chapter 25: The next morning she went on a picknick with her parents and when she got home she received an email from lidewij with the lost pages. Augustus had written an eulogy for her and had send it to Peter for his judgement. He said to lidewij that it was perfect. And so the book came to its end.
