My uncle Oswald door Roald Dahl
Shadow

This book is the diary of Oswald Hendryks Cornelius. One day, Oswald, 17 years old, was having a party at home, because he was going to France soon. But suddenly, in the middle of the party, the doorbell rang. It was a friend of Oswald\'s father. Oswald invited him to his party and the man started talking about the Blister Beetle. It was a special kind of beetle, because when you take it if it\'s dried and crushed you\'ll get very horny. It works after nine minutes, and then you get so horny you could rape anyone in your neighborhood. After the party Oswald went to France. But he was bored and he couldn\'t get the idea of that aphrodisiac out of his mind, so he went to Sudan. There he bought a bag full of blister beetle powder. Back in France he made pills of it and sold it to rich people for a lot of money. He earned a lot with that, but he didn\'t think it was enough. When he was back in England, he met professor A.R. Woresley. The professor had discovered a way to freeze sperm for a very long time and make a woman pregnant afterwards. Oswald started thinking and got a great idea to earn more money. If they used a lady and powder from Blister Beetles, they could get the sperm of famous people, and sell it for a lot of money to women who want to have a baby of a famous man. Oswald asked Yasmin, a fine-looking girl, to give the powder to a famous person and let him make love to her to catch his sperm in a bag. Yasmin said it was alright with her, so she started working with him. In London they started \"The Semen\'s home\", the place where all the sperm was stored. After they had done everyone in the list, they all took a month off. But when Oswald returned to \"the semen\'s home\", he found a letter from Yasmin and Arthur. They got married and they took all the sperm with them. Oswald understood there was nothing to do about it, and then he got such a fabulous idea again. He started a factory for Blister Beetle pills in Sudan, and he was a millionaire before he was thirty.

Main characters.

-Oswald Cornelius Esquire: He is the writer of the diary. He is a son of rich people and he wants to become very rich himself, even before he turns thirty. So he never has to work again. He is a very clever person and takes a lot of advantage of people. Oswald never gives up and does everything for success.

-Yasmin Howcomely: She is a biology student of Girton (the ladies\' college at the university). She has an English father and a Persian mother. She works together with Oswald and A.R. Woresley, by collecting the semen from famous men. She is a very pretty girl and a kind of hooker.

-A.R. Woresley: He is the chemistry tutor of Cambridge. Woresley is a middle-aged short man, untidy dressed and smoking pipes. Oswald and he grow into a pleasant student-tutor relationship. He has a sister Emmaline, who is not attractive at all. A.R. Woresley has found a way to freeze semen and to keep it alive for a long time. He uses the semen to do hypodermic insemination with cows and bulls. Oswald cooperates with him to work out his plans.

Favorite scene.

Most of the scene were nice, but one of them is the best. It is the scene in which Oswald sees the letter from Arthur and Yasmin. When he finds out that the two of them are married and disappeared with all the sperm with them. I will citate a little piece: (pg. 201).

Dear Oswald
Arthur and I got married last week... -Arthur? Who the hell was Arthur? We have gone far away and I hope you won’t mind too much but we’ve taken The Semen’s Home with us, at least all of it except Proust… -Jesus Christ! Arthur must be Arthur Worseley! Arthur Woresley! Yes. We have left you Proust……(enz) -I was reeling. I coudn’t read on. I unlocked the door and staggered inside and found a bottle of wiskey. I sloshed some a glass and gulped it down. And so this scene goes on. This is my favorite scene because Oswald is a person who always takes advantage of people. And now the sperm for witch he drugged and used people is stolen. After all his hard work the arrogant man is left behind with noting left. So he is fallen in his own trap and the people he used are gone with all the sperm and money. And his reaction was very funny.

Quotation: (pg.163/164) Yasmin has to seduce a pianist for the sperm. “She simply stood there with her face upturned to the window, waiting for the man to come to her. And come to her he did. I saw him put down his pen and rise slowly from the piano stool. The walked to the window. Then he saw Yasmin. I have spoken many times of her scintillating beauty, and the side of her standing out there so still and serene must have come as a glorious shock to Puccini. He stared. He gaped. Was this a dream? Then Yasmin smiled at him and that broke a spell. I saw him come suddenly out of his trance and I heard him say: ’’Dio mio come bello’’! Then he jumped out of the window clasped Yasmin in a powerful embrace’’.

Personal valuation: I think it is a nice book. The subject is very original and funny, you get the most hilarious moments. Roald Dahl has a great fantasy and because he writes the way he does, you get dragged in his fantasy world. This is very special, not much writers can do that. The book is not predictable, when you start reading you don’t really know what comes. Fortunately are there very few flashbacks, I don’t like flashbacks it is not nice reading them. The book is not very hard to understand, you can not miss the great line. The story is not very exciting it is more very funny and different than other stories, that’s why you keep reading.
