Title: American psycho
Author: Bret Easton Ellis
Summary:
The stunning looking Patrick Bateman is yuppie. Coming from a rich family, he always had what he wanted. As a young man he possesses everything that money can buy. A enormous apartment, fine clothes, a great job at Wall Street and women. But the main character in this novel wants something that money can not buy.
The tanned Bateman spends his days with working in his office, exercising in Xslusive, having expensive lunches with different people at diverse places everyday, back to work, sometimes getting facials, manicures or pedicures. The evening he spends with different people then he had lunch with. He has luxurious and pricey dinners at the places ‘to be’. Afterwards he goes to ‘hottest’ clubs, to party and do some drugs.
Patrick is introduced as a ‘normal’ guy; his life does not much differ from the lives of his friends. Although we get the impression he is not that normal, some of his comments indicates that he is different. “What do you think I do? ...I’m into, oh, murders and executions mostly. It depends”.
On the page 131 is the first murder, which covers a whole page. It is very detailed written. “His eye, bursts open, hangs out of its socket and runs down his face and he keeps blinking which causes what’s left it inside the wound to pour out like red, veiny egg yolk.” After the this murder, the second follows sooner, the third etc. each murder becoming more cruel.
He tortures his victims. The women who he murders are prostitutes, from the street or escorts. He usually has first sexual intercourse with them, and then murders them. The porn scenes are very long and detailed. “Now I make Elizabeth lie on her back and hold her both legs up, open, spreading them as wide as possible, and then I push Christie’s head down and make her lap at the cunt-not suck on it but lap at it, like a thirsty dog-while fingering the clit…”.
Sometimes he eats body parts of the women or wants to drink their blood. He eats skin, meat, intestines etc. “I spend the next fifteen minutes beside myself, pulling out a bluish rope intestine, most of it still connected to the body, and shoving it into my mouth…”
Own opinion:
The book is very detailed, so if you hate blood, you better do not read it. There are also allot of sex scenes in it. The murders and sex scenes are described very well. There also chapters about bands, singers and cd’s, which are not very relevant. Everyone’s clothes are described too detailed by Patrick Bateman. If you like murders, blood this is definitely a book to read.
