Cyprus:
The geographical location and area of Cyprus Cyprus is situated in the Middle-East. It’s an island in the Mediterranean Sea, south of Turkey. The total area is about 9,250 sq miles of which is 9,240 sq miles land and 10 sq miles are water. The island has got a coast line of about 648 km. There is a central plain with mountains to north and south. The lowest point is off course the Mediterranean Sea, and the highest point is the Mount Olympus with his 1,951m. Note: Cyprus is the biggest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Cyprus has a typical Mediterranean climate, with hot and dry summers and a cool, rainy season that extends from October to March.
History of Cyprus: When people discovered the Island there was many copper on the island, and they start calling the island Kypros or The Isle of Copper. That was about 3000 years before Christ. And in the year 2000 before Christ the Achaeans began to speak Greece. In 58 before Christ there was an annexation of the Romans. They were now a part of The East Roman Empire. In 1571 The Ottomans make Cyprus a Turkish province. After the conquest of Great-Britain in 1914 Cyprus becomes a British colony. But in 1955 Cypriote rebels started an armed war against the British people. At the end of the war in 1960, when Makarios 3 was president. (Fazil Küzük was vice-president), Cyprus becomes an independent republic. In 1974 groups of the Turkish army occupies the isle. Since then the UN is searching for a solution but only the Greek-Cypriots do accept the proposal.
The government of Cyprus: The name Cyprus is a short name for The Republic of Cyprus. (Note: The Turkish Cypriot area refers to itself as the \"Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus\" (TRNC.). Like I said Cyprus is a republic. It was an independent state from 16 August 1960 (from the UK). The capital is Nicosia. It is situated in the middle of the island on the buffer zone between The Turkish Cypriot area and the area controlled by the Cyprus Government.
The people of Cyprus and there customs: There are living about 776000 people in Cyprus, off that people 77% are Greek, 18% are Turkish and then you have still 5% with all kind of nationalities. So you can conclude that the most spoken language is Greek then Turkish and then English. The religions of the people are: Greek Orthodox: 78%, Muslim: 18%.
